Azure cost optimization
Azure VM cost optimization: a hands-on checklist
Reduce avoidable VM spend with scheduling, right-sizing, modern families, storage checks, and commitment planning.
Find resources that do not need to run
Start with stopped-but-allocated VMs, detached disks, idle development environments, and workloads that can follow a business-hours schedule. Removing unused hours is often safer than changing a production machine size.
Validate the complete VM profile
Compare vCPU and memory together with temporary storage, network bandwidth, disk throughput, accelerated networking, and regional availability. Similar-looking sizes can have materially different limits.
- Use representative utilization windows.
- Separate predictable baselines from burst demand.
- Evaluate current-generation and Arm-based options.
- Check license and Hybrid Benefit eligibility.
Create an operating rhythm
Assign owners, alert on unusual daily changes, review reservations and savings plans, and record accepted exceptions. Cost optimization lasts when it becomes part of engineering operations rather than a one-time cleanup.
