Overview

What is AWS ECS Monitoring?

AWS ECS (Elastic Container Service) monitoring tracks the health and performance of Docker containers orchestrated by AWS. This involves monitoring at three levels: the overall Cluster capacity, the underlying infrastructure (whether EC2 instances or serverless AWS Fargate), and the individual ECS Tasks and Services running your application code.

Why AWS ECS Monitoring Matters

Container orchestration introduces complexity. You might have a healthy EC2 instance, but the ECS Task running on it might be continually crashing due to hitting a memory limit (OOM). If you don't monitor ECS at the Task level, you won't know why your application is unstable. Furthermore, monitoring ECS Cluster reservations ensures you aren't over-provisioning expensive EC2 instances when your containers are mostly idle.

  • Detect containers crashing due to OOM (Out of Memory) kills
  • Optimize EC2 instance sizing for your ECS clusters
  • Monitor serverless AWS Fargate tasks with zero agent installation
  • Ensure ECS Services maintain their desired task count

Core Use Cases

Vital for teams running microservices on AWS who need to ensure that their containerized APIs, background workers, and web apps have sufficient CPU and memory allocated without wasting cloud spend.
